Regulars

If you’ve ever worked a day in your life in customer service, you’ll understand what I mean when I say that every workplace has it’s regulars.

I’ve worked in a variety of different establishments since I was a kid. Even when I was cleaning blood from the floor of a butchers, I still noticed the odd person who would make a habit of visiting. Believe me, it was better to think about locals coming in for their meats rather than focusing on the pig carcass hanging in front of me. This is also the reason I’ve never turned my nose up at doing something, because when people say “nothing could be worse than this” I remind them I worked in a place that also housed its own abattoir. Clean out a dusty stock room? Yes please!

For those keeping track of my depressing thrilling life, you may remember that when I took a year off to do music and save up money, I worked in a cinema in my hometown. We always had this one old lady who came in. Her name was Pat if I remember correctly, she was pretty bad ass. She’d always buy a bag of Malteasers or Minstrels and made it her mission to watch all the films a bunch of times. She saw the newest Rambo more times than anyone should’ve, but it was cool to see someone her age who still had a passion for cinema, and in my hometown too, where the biggest film one year was Eddie Murphy’s ‘Meet Dave’. She was cool.

There is a Vision Express advert out right now involving a man whose glasses keep getting nicked by mischievous monkeys. It’s not funny, despite what the comments on Youtube say. But it got me thinking. If everywhere has regulars, what type of person would an optician’s regular be? There must be someone out there who wakes up and thinks “I fancy popping in to see [name] at Vision Express!”. What kind of monster does that? Sure, the guy in the Vision Express adverts has an excuse, those monkeys have poor eyesight and require bifocals in order to see where exactly they’re throwing their feces at. But surely this is an isolated incident?

What other obscure places would have regulars? Safari Parks? “I just love going to the safari park each week. Yeah, my wing mirrors usually get pulled apart, and my bumper got dented by a rhino once, but I just love it! Worth every penny. How dare you insinuate I’m a moron!”. Do rhinos run free in Safari Parks? I don’t think people realize that if you cycle through Animal Planet you can have your fill of wildlife without having to leave your house.

See, cinemas I can understand. Restaurants, bookshops, hairdressers, clothes stores. These places have regulars for a reason. Sometimes it’s about the community that involves itself with the store. If a kid loves playing Warhammer 40k, but doesn’t have any friends who do, he could easily find people at say, a Games Workshop, who share his hobby*. But what kind of deranged human spends a significant amount of their time and money on new glasses?

I sat on my glasses the first week of moving to Hackney in September 2008. Still wearing them. Maybe I’m just jealous of someone who has such disposable income. Humph.

*I used to buy Tyranids and Space Marines. There was only three of us who played. I also spent twenty minutes while writing this to figure out if it really was the Tyranids. I’m still none the wiser. Has all this changed your opinion of me? I doubt it.

The Avengers (No Spoilers!)

It will be a surprise to no one that yesterday I went to see The Avengers and no, I won’t be referring to it as ‘Marvel Avengers Assemble’ because I am not a six year old playing with his toys.

3 Better Uses For The Tupac Hologram Technology

A holographic Tupac singing on-stage with Jay-Z and Snoop at Coachella? I guess that’s impressive, but let’s not sing the praises of such a feat just yet. If you ran home from school waving an English exam paper with a grade C on it, your parents would be glad you passed, but it’s still just a C. I can’t help but think of three instances where holographic technology could have been put to better use.

Steven Spielberg’s Laser Cats sketch on Saturday Night Live this week had me in stitches. Totally unexpected.

It was a good episode. Go watch if you haven’t already.

What the fork?

How many people live in your house?

In my house, there’s three of us. We have 13 forks. Why do we have so many forks? Well, why does any one? In case someone comes over? In case ten people suddenly decide to pop round for tea?

Pinteresting & other stuff

Waz up. Last year I sort of gave up reblogging on here. I’ve been trying to keep this blog for my own stuff. Logical, right? However, like every young adult obsessed with online video and other distractions from real life, I come across stuff I want to share with everyone. So, I got one of those Pinterest things. I’m not overly impressed with it, but it’s pretty easy to use so, I’ll continue to ”””’pin”””’ things as I go along. Pinterest, Instagram and Temple Run in the space of two weeks, what a win for productivity.

Saying that though, I’m still writing and stuff. Up and down, y’know? Hoping to start filming some sketches next month but as you may know, pulling off projects like this, relying on everyone making time in their lives, making sure the right equipment is available, requires the stars to align.

What do you people do with your phone/ipod/mp3 player when you go running? Last summer when we were running for a bit, there was no need for an accompanying soundtrack/podcast, we ran as a group. But I’m all alone in the big bad North right now. I need to listen to music. But, I don’t own shorts with zip pockets. What should I do? The most logical thing would be to get some new shorts, but I hate spending what little £$€YenRupee I’ve got. Urgh.

Here’s some podcasts I’ve been listening to: Nerdist, JV Club, Here’s The Thing w/ Alec Baldwin, Ten Minute Podcast, and of course, Mayo and Kermode (but you can dig that one out. Papa bird just guards the nest, y’all gotta fly for yourselves).

So…yeah. Shorts with zips. They exist, right?

Cowboy Bebop OST 1 - Bad Dog No Biscuit

I’m pretty certain no television/anime has had a better original soundtrack than Cowboy Bebop. I could (and have) listen to it all day. I think I originally watched the series around this time 2 years ago? I remember it being Easter and waking up, watching as many episodes as I could, then going to sleep. It was a good weekend spent well.

If you’ve never seen Bebop, sort yourself out.

Terrible Interviews #2

If for some reason I find myself on a film set with my microphone in hand, I often pass the down-time by conducting interviews with the person closest to me. This week: Sam and Ryan give me some tips.

I’ve never had an avocado.

Knew this bass amp would come in handy one day after the band broke up.
The back of it got chewed up by rats in a practise room we rented a few years ago, but still good as new!

Giant Enemy Podcast 007 - The RS Files and Meal o Meat

The boys are back in town! Adam and Luke team up for another exciting and slightly delirious episode of Giant Enemy Podcast.
This week they’re reminiscing about the first website they ever built, a spoof paranormal hub named The RS Files, which you can view here: http://www.freewebs.com/thersfiles/home.html

They also talk about their favourite type of meat as well as laughing about the misfortunes of people they used to know. Very mature stuff.

Luke also makes a promise of some money, though considering they’re both poor as shit, might not be the best idea.
As always you can tweet them feedback at @deadartists and @lukeibbetson or send abuse. Bring it on, world!

We recorded this the other day. It was refreshing to be back podcasting with Luke again after a long break. It’s a weird one, I guess.

Been making my way through this beauty this week. Crazy good. I breezed through Secret Invasion recently so I’ve been taking my time reading Spider-Island. Wanted to save this for my coach trip tomorrow. Gonna be spending some time with friends back in London. From what I remember, it might have been Thanksgiving when we were all together last, so its long overdue.

A weekend of filming, podcasting (yeah, really! That too is overdue but just roll with it) and fun. We’re also watching a friend’s degree show, which I’m sure will be great.
