I’ve been really into these ‘CNBC Originals’ documentaries ever since I watched their Coca Cola one last month. I think it’s great to have knowledge about the history of these massive corporations that run the world. Yeah, they’re totally biased in the way that it all comes from the company’s mouth, but I find the whole thing really interesting, well formatted and presented.
To me, its fascinating to see the roots of these corporations and how they’ve adapted their business plans over the course of decades. The one I watched today, detailing the history of the discount store Target, gave me insight into something I knew nothing about.
Since its inception, Target has always strived to give back to the community it inhabits. They donate a percentage of weekly profits (5% before tax) to worthy causes. They also donate a portion of the money generated from your yearly sales to the school of your choice.
Now, obviously I don’t know the full story, but why is it possible a company to do this, yet in this country, stores like Tesco or Asda offer measly ‘collect the tokens to get computers for schools’? Target wants to build trust with its brand, that is why it involves itself and its staff in so many regeneration projects, sending a bus full of employees to help re-build local libraries. After all, its all from profit. If you’re building trust in the community, you’ll be building trust with the brand.
Personal opinion aside, you should give the documentary a watch, if you feel like it.
